Just in....this little tidbit from Arkansas: Misplaced 'not' in Arkansas law allows babies to marry
Yeah, apparently the Arkansas legislature forgot to proofread a new marriage-age law and now even BABIES can get married in Arkansas.
The law, which took effect July 31, was intended to establish 18 as the minimum age to marry, while also allowing pregnant minors to marry with parental consent.
My favorite part of the story -- a mother who gave her 17-year-old daughter permission to marry was suing because the marriage license was denied under the new law. [The old law allowed 16-year-old girls to marry with permission. All I have to say to that is - WHY?].
And apparently, this mistake might not be fixed until the 2009 legislative session.
So mommas....don't let your babies go to Arkansas.
[I apologize to my friend in Arkansas for this post...but it was too funny to not post!]
