So, my house is full of baby stuff. Clothes, toys, high chairs, walkers and diaper bags.
I have oodles of diaper bags. Why? Because since Olivia was born nearly 4 years ago I have been hunting for the "perfect" diaper bag. I buy one, I think it's "the one" and then I am disappointed.
Hence, the oodles of diaper bags.
So...I decided to clean out the closet that was home to my diaper bag collection and do a nice thing - I took them to a resale shop near my home.
Here's the thing about kid's resale shops - they are full of baby and kid stuff that people don't want. Their kids grew out of the clothes, or the high chair or got bored with the toy. There is never a shortage of "stuff" at these places.
I called the Once Upon a Child store by my house and asked if they were in need of diaper bags. "Oh yes!" said the employee who answered the phone. "Bring them in."
So I did. Now here's the other thing you must know about these stores -- your stuff has to be in decent shape. No stains, no holes, etc. Basically it can't look like crap. Simple enough, right?
Yeah. Not so much.
I took in 3 diaper bags. One is about 10 months old - I bought it just before Emma was born. It is in perfect condition. No rips, no stains, no nothing. The other 2 bags are about 2 - 3 years old, but still in good condition. Again, no rips, stains, etc.
After glancing at my bags - I don't even think she picked them up to really inspect them - the woman at the shop says to me: "I'm done with these. I cannot purchase any of them."
Me: "Oh. Why?"
Nasty woman: "Because of the poor condition they are in."
Me: "Whatever." [what I really wanted to say was "Look here you stupid bitch, this bag..yeah it's practically new and as for your snot-nosed attitude about USED goods....you can kiss my ass!" But I didn't say that. My kids were with me].
Me: "You can be certain that I won't be coming back to this store again."
Now really. I don't own things that are in poor condition. Especially not things that I'm trying to sell at a consignment shop. I was insulted not only by her description of my things, but by her attitude. I really wanted to remind her that she wasn't working at Saks Fifth Avenue....she was working at a resale store. Everything in the store is USED!
Anyway....I really won't go back to Once Upon a Child. The people are rude. I'll take my gently-used baby stuff to another consignment shop -- one where the snob factor is not at play.
That is ridiculous! What are they looking for - a never been used bag?!?! I mean, people at the store know they are buying used...why can't they decide what will work for them?
ReplyDeleteI can totally see this happening. Hello? They are USED. You should try craigslist.com.
ReplyDeleteI have the same diaper bag issues. :)
and the best part....
ReplyDeletemy husband took the bags to another re-sale shop and we made $17.
i so wanted to pull a "Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman" and walk back into the Once Upon a Child and say:
"Hey, remember me? And my "poor condition" diaper bags? Yeah well, you made a big mistake. I just got almost $20 for them. HAHAHAHAHA."
but then i figured that i might appear a LITTLE bit crazy if i did that...
haha.
