I could have bought a Kia Rio with that money!

OK, so the hubby and I are preparing our tax documents to hand over to our accountant (read: my dad....also known as Super CPA).

Anyway....the last document we needed was the tax form from our daycare. It states exactly how much money we paid last year to have our children cared for while we worked. I damn near choked on my coffee when I saw the number.

$14, 200!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, kids...you read that right. Fourteen THOUSAND two hundred dollars.

Holy shit Batman. That's a lot of money.
And, the girls only go part-time. Four days a week, from 7:30 am until 3 pm.

Crap almighty.

I could have purchased a small foreign automobile for that kind of cash. That amount of cash would buy about 3,000 grande lattes at Starbucks. [I think. I'm not THAT good at math].

Anyway....I'm just FLOORED at how much it costs families when it comes to childcare. It's absolutely ridiculous that it should cost almost $15,000 a year for daycare.

I could go on and on about the cost....but I won't. I just wanted to share my shock of the day.

  1. OH.MY.GOSH! That is insanity! The girl my mom recently hired got her job purely for the health insurance. Every cent of her paycheck goes to daycare.

  2. I just commented and it didn't appear, so I'm commenting again. What I said was ...

HOLY SCHNIKEYS! Just yesterday I was pricing some day cares because we are trying to decide if we want to get the girls into an all-day program in prep for Kindergarten. (they will be preK next year) The price would be $1,400 a month. That's a MORTGAGE! We could own a vacation home for that amount! It's highway robbery. And what really stinks is you know that the staff caring for the children aren't paid that well!

OK, granted...the kids get breakfast and lunch and a snack. and they're getting social interaction and all that good stuff. but my god....it's so much money.

  4. Holy crap, that is crazy! My friend tells me to send two kids, one full-time and one part-time it is more then her mortgage and car payment combined each month. I mean seriously, that is just ridiculous. Why is it so much?!

  5. I too had the daycare blues at one point in my life. But my Daughter is now school age and the funny part is, it is cheaper to send her to Private School then it was daycare......

  6. Which is why so many Moms just stay at home. Because they just work to pay for childcare. :( Crazy.
