OK, so Merriam-Webster has named the 2007 Word of the Year.
Drum roll please.
It is: w00t. Yeah, that's spelled with a "w" and two zeros in the middle and then a "t". A word spelled with numbers.
Do you have any idea what "W00t" means? I didn't.
Here's the info on w00t: "W00t," a hybrid of letters and numbers used by gamers as an exclamation of happiness or triumph, topped all other terms in the Springfield-based dictionary publisher's online poll for the word that best sums up 2007.
I also didn't know this: For technophobes, the word also is familiar from the 1990 movie "Pretty Woman," in which Julia Roberts startles her date's upper-crust friends with a hearty "Woot, woot, woot!" at a polo match.
I am a fan of "Pretty Woman" but never once did I think she was using some "l33t" (elite) speak. I thought she was just being funny and whooping it up. Shows how much I know.

Personally, as a "word herder", I think they could have come up with a better word. This one is just stupid.
HAHAHA!! I have never heard of this!!!
ReplyDeleteWould you please use this in a sentence?!?!?! :D
I think it works something like this:
ReplyDelete"Hey I just won the lottery! w00t
w00t!"
I find "woot" extremely disappointing.
ReplyDelete"Word herder".
