Personally, I think it's an OK [good!] thing. I don't really see where it can hurt his campaign to have Ms. O on his side. She has been a very vocal supporter of his since before he officially announced he was running for prez.
Sure, she's a celebrity and all that, but really, so is former Pres. Clinton and he's out campaigning for Hillary. [Yes, he's also a former president, but he could also be considered at least an "A" list celeb]. (And don't even get me started about Ted Nugent and Huckabee. Yikes.)
Politics and entertainment have so many connections anymore, it's no wonder that Oprah is backing Obama in such a public manner. I don't think he has anything to lose [and really, she doesn't either]. If he gets the nomination [and eventually WINS!], maybe it's because of Oprah and maybe it's just because he ROCKS and is the best candidate. If he doesn't get the nom, then he goes back to being a senator and she continues to be the queen of all media.
And if it helps him get voters, that's great. If people say "gosh, I really like that Barack Obama because Oprah does", well that's their perogative. I'm positive there are people out there saying they like Hillary because of Bill [the only reason I can think of to like her] or they like Fred Thompson because they love "Law and Order". It's all relative, if you ask me. [Me? I'm voting for Barack because I like his views and I think he is just what the broken machine in Washington needs].
So, that's my view for what it's worth.

ReplyDeleteI am torn on celebrities getting involved with politics but anymore the lines are so blurred you almost can't fight it.
I like when celebrities get involved b/c I think it creates more of an interest among voters. Though I believe people should vote b/c they have the right too and it is important...I understand people won't for those reasons alone. So if these celebrities get the issues out there and create an interest I am for it!
What I don't like is that people are just picking their canidates based on the celebrities and NOT always the issues. "Well I like so an so and they are supporting X canidate and therefore I am voting for X canidate." I think people should be looking at the issues as well.
I am SO pumped for this upcoming election...Go Barack!
P.S. Did you know on Myspace there are profiles of all the canidates?!?! How crazy is that??
