A few random thoughts about Christmas...
First of all, let me just get this out of the way... MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!
There...I said it! Merry Christmas! How very un-politically correct of me. In a world where that simple greeting has been PC'd into "Happy Holidays" and "Silent Night" becomes "Quiet Evening" at school "holiday" pageants...I'm going to stick with what works for me. So once again, with feeling, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
This whole politically correct Christmas things really irks me. If you are one of the millions who celebrate Christmas, then I say go ahead and shout your holiday greetings from the rooftops, right alongside Jolly Ol' St. Nick. If on the other hand, you celebrate Hanukkah or Kawanza or something else entirely, go ahead and shout your holiday greetings too. It won't bother me one bit.
After all, aren't we allowed religious freedom in this country? Shouldn't that extend to freedom to celebrate what we want, how we want?
[And in case you missed the memo...Christmas REALLY is a religious holiday -- regardless of what every retailer in the world wants us to believe].
That being the case, why should the conservative right (wrong) be permitted to dumb down Christmas and make people feel guilty for singing "Silent Night" or "Joy to the World" or whatever religious Christmas song they prefer? Why should school students be denied their right to celebrate Christmas? Sure, they can add in some other religious holiday songs to even it out...that's fine too. That way everyone is happy.
While we're on the topic of Christmas...why is it that the whole season was so much more enjoyable when we were kids? I can remember waking up at 5:30 a.m. as a kid, just waiting to hear mom and dad get up, so that we could RUN downstairs and open our gifts. It was all so exciting and fun.
Now, it's just stress. We stress about how much money it's going to cost to buy all the gifts on our lists. We stress about getting all that shopping finished in time. We stress about whose house we're going to visit, who is making what for dinner, when cookies are going to get baked.
Where did the fun go? Sure it will be fun to watch Olivia unwrap her gifts...but after the "big" day, all I can think about is when we can take the tree down and get the house back to normal and start paying off the bills. See, NO FUN!
I think we need to take Christmas back from the retail stores and online shopping sites and credit card companies. Someone needs to take a stand and stop all the commercialization of Christmas. Yeah, a few presents under the tree is nice, but when people get arrested because they are fighting over a $400 XBox, doesn't it cheapen the whole reason for the season?
