Monday Musings - January 25

Another Monday....more random thoughts from me. Aren't you lucky? ;)

I'm honestly viewing these posts as a way to make myself write something that isn't work-related. Why? Because I need to write. I love to write. And it's a lot easier to be passive aggressive in a blog post than on Facebook.

Kidding.
Sort of.

Anyway....

1. January. Seriously this month. It really feels like the LONGEST MONTH OF THE YEAR. Every. Single. Year. I know there are only 31 days in January - just like March, July, August, October, and December - but damn. This month just goes on forever. And I can't really dislike the month since BOTH girls celebrate January birthdays. It just feels really, REALLY long.

2. I make a ton of lists. Honestly you should see my desk right now. I have a "to do" list for work. I have several sticky notes for things I can't forget to do (one of which I already forgot to do today). I have lists in my head. It is ridiculous. So man lists, so much shit to remember. Do you ever feel like maybe you're trying to do too much?

3.I'm disturbed by the increasing lack of common courtesy online. I just don't understand why people have to be rude to others whether it is on Facebook, Twitter, or even in an email. I wish everyone would stop and think "would I say this to this person's face?" or "would I use this tone (usually the "you're an effing moron" tone) when speaking to this person face-to-face?" I'm gonna bet that NO for the most part you would not behave like that if you were face-to-face so WHY IN THE WORLD is it OK to act like that just because there is a computer/smartphone/iPad between you and the other person. Think before you hit send.

4. This is how my week usually goes:
Monday - Long list of things to do and the mindset "I have all week to do all of this stuff!"
Tuesday - Still have a lot of time. Oh look, Pinterest!
Wednesday - Oh man. Just a couple more days. Better get busy.
Thursday - Crap.
Friday - Looks like I'm working on a Friday night.
Saturday - Time to do the laundry.
Sunday - Relax. A little bit.

Here's to a stress-free week.

Four Years

This was in my Time Hop today:

Four years ago today I quit my job with the Trolls. I sent my resignation via email to the corporate office in Cincinnati, told the regional manager I was quitting, packed up my office, and walked out of the WORST. JOB. IN. THE. HISTORY. OF. EVER.

That Facebook post seen above was exactly how I felt on July 18, 2011.

FREEDOM..
Four year ago.

It's crazy that it's been FOUR YEARS. A lot has happened since then.

Professionally, I've been working from home since 2012 and I love it.

The job I've been in for the past 2 1/2 years is the BEST JOB EVER and I thank my lucky stars every day for this job. I love what I'm doing. I work for someone who respects me and respects my work. I adore my co-workers - we're a TEAM even though we are scattered throughout the country.

So it seems that four years is the point in time where that old job is just a distant memory that can't have a negative effect on my anymore. In the 12 months after I quit I was still dealing with the damage that months of bullying did to me.

But now?

Now I trust my ability to do a good job.
I trust my ability as a writer.
I feel confident in my work.

And did I mention that I love my job?

Yeah. You know you're in the right job when you wake up every single morning and think "I can't wait to get to work." Two and a half years into this job and it still excites me. THAT is key to job happiness.

Back to School

Today is the day.
Back to school.

Somehow I have a second grader and a fifth grader. Not sure how that happened...other than the fact that time flies when you're having fun.

The house is strangely quiet this morning. As a work-at-home mom I get used to having the kids at home all summer...watching Disney Channel, playing in their rooms, building forts in the basement.

This summer was full of fun and adventure and was the busiest summer we've had. And now it's back to the daily grind of wake up early, pack lunches, wait for the bus, and homework.

But the kids are excited to head back to school ... and I have to admit it'll be nice to get back to my "school year work from home" routine.

Here's to a great school year!

Not So Wordless Wednesday - Words of Wisdom

So very true.
Sometimes it's hard to remember this.

I think it's always best to be passionate about
what you're doing. If you aren't passionate
about your work, you won't be happy.

So happy that I love what I'm doing.
It makes all the difference in the world.

Freedom from bullies in the workplace

Did you know this week is Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week?

No?

Don't worry. I didn't know it was either until I saw a post for it today on Facebook - you know, the best source of news out there.

There's a lot of talk these days about bullies - in school, on the bus, on the playground. Bullies are everywhere it seems. Even in the workplace.

Yep, that's rights. Adults can be bullies. And adults can be the target of bullies. It happens every single day in workplaces all around the country. In fact, 54 million Americans have been bullied in the workplace.

I would know.
I was one of them.

I wrote about my experiences here.
I wrote about quitting my job here.
I wrote a little more about the bullies here.
I wrote about the day I quit here.
And I wrote about NOT letting the bullies win here.

The thing is, I'm still not "over" being the target of a workplace bully. I don't know if it's something one truly ever gets over. I haven't gained back all my confidence that was systematically stripped away during six months of bullying. I still second guess myself when it comes to my current job. I wait for those bullying emails to show up in my inbox. I wonder if people really like me, or if they're just saying they do to be "polite."

Workplace bullying IS a source of shame for those of us who have experienced it. That's part of the "power" bullies have over their targets. Bullies shame us into thinking that no one cares and no one will listen. Targets don't think anyone will believe them. The targets (I will not call myself a victim) feel as if they have nowhere to turn. They don't feel that they can trust HR to do anything (especially in my case, when the person bullying me was second in command at the organization). Coworkers might want to help but they often stay silent out of fear that they'll be the next target.

And, as a target of a workplace bully you feel weak. And worthless. You cry in your office behind closed doors. You feel sick when you walk through the front doors. And you feel relief when you go home at night, only to dread waking up the next day. And you think it's best if you just remain silent and hide in your office. I tried to do that - I avoided my coworkers as much as possible because I thought it was best to keep quiet.

Workplace bullies aren't just "bad bosses" - it goes way beyond that.

Workplace bullying doesn't just happen one time.
It's repeated over and over again until the target is fired or quits.

Workplace bullying is verbal and non-verbal. It's intimidation and threats and humiliation.

Bullying in the workplace is real.
And it's horrible.
And it will change a person's life forever.
And it needs to stop.
NOW.

So I am asking all of you - whether you've been bullied or have witnessed someone get bullied at work - speak up. Stand up for your coworker. Stand up for yourself. Say "enough is ENOUGH!" If we stand together, we can end workplace bullying.

Another week flies by...and happy birthday to The Fishbowl!

Seriously.
I don't mean to neglect this blog.

Somehow I managed to write TWO posts last Friday in the span of an hour and then BAM! An entire week goes by and while I have a lot to say, I never find the time to sit down and blog.

I even forgot to "celebrate" this blog's "blogiversary.".
My little "Fishbowl" turned SEVEN years old yesterday.

Holy crap.
I've been blogging for seven years.
That almost makes me a "real" blogger, right?
(LOL)

I have no good excuse for not writing.
I've been sick all week.
I've tried to work this week - with little success.
I've had physical therapy.
Oh and Monday WAS a holiday.

The kids are both in school now so really I should have a lot more time to write, right?
Yeah. Not so much.
My day goes a little something like this...

Wake up at 6:30, shower, get dressed, pack lunches, get kids ready for school, have first cup of coffee, check email/Twitter/Facebook, stand at bus stop, put kids on bus, come back inside house, check email/Twitter/Facebook again, have second cup of coffee, sign in to work email by 9 a.m., deal with client emails/Twitter/Facebook, check my own email/Twitter/Facebook, check work email again and realize it's 11 a.m. and my clients are all ignoring me, wander downstairs, eat a bowl of cereal for lunch, check The Weather Channel for any impeding hurricanes, head back to upstairs to the office, check work email again and realize west coast clients have finally answered the email I sent them yesterday while east coast clients are still not answering any emails, post client stuff to Twitter/Facebook/Pinterest, check personal email/Twitter/Facebook, send more emails to clients, realize it's 3 p.m and the kids are on their way home, do homework between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m., cook dinner, clean kitchen, help with bath time, check work email one more time because it's ONLY4:30 p.m. on the west coast and I'm sure my client is going to need something RIGHT NOW, put kids to bed at 8 p.m., collapse on couch and think: DAMN. I DIDN'T BLOG AGAIN TODAY.

Yeah.
Somehow I thought working from home would give me more "me" time.
It's a lie.
That doesn't happen.

That laundry I did last weekend?
Yeah.
It's STILL sitting in the laundry basket, waiting to be hung in the closet.
I keep hoping it's going to hang itself on the hangers. So far, no dice.

And honestly, I spend my ENTIRE day staring at my computer for work. So when it's "quitting time"...I step away from the laptop. And well, it's really hard to blog without a computer. (ha).

I need to get back into the swing of things.
Again.
I have a lot to blog about.
Hell, I'm even considering starting another blog where I can let loose all my political ramblings. It would be "safer" than doing it here, believe me.

Anyway....happy blogiversary to The Fishbowl.
And for those of you still coming by to "visit"...thanks for reading.
